BEFORE THE SURGERY
Before you undergo surgery, your doctor will prescribe preliminary examinations.
These investigations (blood tests, electrocardiograms, radiographs) are necessary to assess your general health state and to determine whether you are eligible to withstand the surgery and the post-operative course. In case of chronic diseases (for example cardiac, respiratory, renal) a specialist consulting may be necessary.
It is also recommended to prepare the home environment for your return home, so as to minimize the risk of falls or accidents.
IN HOSPITAL
Remember to bring with you everything you need and what is required by your doctor: list of medicines normally taken, clinical documentation (preoperative research reports, x-rays), identity document, health card and any devices such as braces or crutches.
The surgery will have a variable duration and the medical and nursing staff will take care of you.
AFTER SURGERY
Hospital stay varies depending on the patient and the type of surgery.
Following the intervention, you will need to rely on the support of someone who will assist you at home or, if not available, you can organize a short stay at a rehabilitation facility.
You may need some devices like crutches or braces, which will be prescribed and recommended by your orthopedic surgeon.
YOUR NEW JOINT
During the post-operative course, always refer to your orthopedic surgeon and your primary care physician.
Follow your surgeon’s instructions and in case of any doubt, don’t hesitate to contact him.
Remember that a healthy and active lifestyle will contribute to a faster recovery and do not forget to undergo regular checks.
